Day 6: Lord of the Sabbath and the Calling of the Twelve

ree

Luke Chapter 6

Luke 6 opens with a moment that reveals Jesus’ authority over tradition. When questioned for allowing His disciples to pick grain on the Sabbath, Jesus reminds the Pharisees that the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. In other words, rest was created for humanity’s good, not as a burden to bear. Jesus teaches us that relationship with God is not about legalism but love, mercy and purpose.

Soon after, Jesus heals a man with a withered hand, again on the Sabbath, not to provoke, but to demonstrate that doing good reflects God’s heart. Mercy always sits at the center of His command.

Later in this rich chapter, Jesus chooses the Twelve apostles. Ordinary men called into extraordinary purpose. He appoints them not because of status or perfection, but because God delights in using willing hearts. It reminds us that God still calls everyday believers into His work today.

Then Jesus preaches what we often call “the Sermon on the Plain,” teaching blessings, love your enemies, forgiveness, and generosity. One of the most powerful lessons here is that we give because God gives. We forgive because God forgives. We love because He first loved us.

Finally, Jesus speaks of building your life on rock instead of sand, hearing His words and putting them into practice. Christian faith is not merely hearing truth, but living it.

Reflection Verse: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Luke 6:36

Prayer Prompt: Lord, give me a heart that values mercy over legalism, love over judgment and obedience over comfort. Call me into Your purpose and teach me to build my life on Your Word. Amen.
